Punctuation mark

edit

  1. An asterism, a rare symbol used to separate sections within a chapter of a book.
  2. (rare) Used to call attention to a passage.

Usage notes

edit

Often this symbol is replaced with three, sometimes more, consecutive asterisks or dots (see dinkus). Otherwise, an extra line is placed between paragraphs. An asterism or its analogue may be used in conjunction with the extra space to mark a smaller subdivision than a subchapter.
