Etymology edit

A word peculiar to the Northern Ryukyuan family. Cognate with Northern Amami-Oshima さばき (sabaki), Kikai さばち (sabachi), Yoron さばき (sabaki), and Kunigami さばーちー (sabāchī). All other Japonic branches use a descendant of Proto-Japonic *kusi instead.

Perhaps derived from 捌ちゅん (sabachun, to comb);[1] cognate with Japanese 捌く (sabaku, to handle).[2]
