Etymology
editA word peculiar to the Northern Ryukyuan family. Cognate with Northern Amami Ōshima さばき (sabaki), Kikai さばち (sabachi), Yoron さばき (sabaki), and Kunigami さばーちー (sabāchī). All other Japonic branches use a descendant of Proto-Japonic *kusi instead.
Perhaps derived from 捌ちゅん (sabachun, “to comb”);[1] cognate with Japanese 捌く (sabaku, “to handle”).[2]
