editSino-Korean word from 蘇聯 (“USSR”) Hanja form 소 (so), the abbreviation of 소비에트 (sobieteu) or orthographic borrowing from Chinese 蘇維埃/苏维埃 (sūwéi'āi) and 연 (yeon), short for 연방 (yeonbang) meaning "union", "federation", or "commonwealth".
