Etymology

edit

Loss of final /-m/ from 조부(祖父)님 (jobunim, honored grandfather, formal term), probably by analogy with 할머니 (halmeoni, grandmother). This analogy also eliminated the formality of the source term.

Noun

조부니 (jobuni) (southwestern Jeolla dialect)

  1. grandfather
    Synonym: (Standard Korean) 할아버지 (harabeoji)
