Etymology

edit

Inherited from Sanskrit दाक्षिण (dākṣiṇa, right), from दक्षिण (dakṣiṇa, right, south).

The variation between forms with /kkʰ/ and /h/ (from earlier /kʰ/) originates in differing Old Indo-Aryan syllabification patterns; 𑀤𑀸𑀳𑀺𑀡 (dāhiṇa) is from */ˈd̪ɑː.kʂi.ɳɐ/, while 𑀤𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺𑀡 (dakkhiṇa) is from /ˈd̪ɐk.ʂi.ɳɐ/. Compare 𑀭𑀸𑀇 (rāi) and 𑀭𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺 (ratti), from different syllabifications of रात्रि (rātri).
