editFrom Proto-Indo-European *(H)ulp-i- (“marten, cat”), whence Proto-Indo-Iranian *HlawpaHćás. The traditional relation to Proto-Indo-European *h₂(w)lop- ~ *h₂ulp- (“(red) fox”) (whence Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), Old Armenian աղուէս (ałuēs), Proto-Celtic *loɸernos, Lithuanian lãpė) is unclear and somewhat contested.
