Proto-West Germanic masculine ja-stem nouns.

These nouns are masculine, typically with the following endings:

  • in the nominative singular: after a heavy root, -i after a light root;
  • in the genitive singular: -ijas after a heavy root, -jas with West Germanic gemination after a light root;
  • in the nominative plural: -ijō or -ijōs after a heavy root, -jō or -jōs with West Germanic gemination after a light root.

The stem classes are named from the perspective of Proto-Germanic and may not still be visible in Proto-West Germanic inflections. In Proto-Germanic, the endings were the same as that of the a-stems, but later sound changes caused the two classes to diverge.
