    Ruth Benedict's (1959[1934]:79) utopian assessment of the Pueblos as an “Apollonian people” who abhorred all excess and violent behavior reflected the majority opinion held and propagated by social philosophers during much of the twentieth century. By extension, this view that native Pueblo Indians were paragons of peace who lived their lives in complete harmony with their environment was also attributed to the Anasazi, their prehistoric ancestors.
