This survey of contemporary attitudes turns out to have been an article from the Observer in 1963, and he uses it to begin the 1964 article. There, however, its role is not as a parallel for Pausanias’ speech, but to illustrate a difference; it seems at first sight a good parallel, but in fact it is not — the parallel only applies to the attitudes of ‘Aristophanic man’.
