The Harperites are just part of a global right-wing onslaught that includes Australia, Israel, Europe, the Islamic world, India, and of course the United States.
The Harperites, seizing on yet another purported example of Liberal sleaze, fortuitously popping up in the middle of a federal election campaign, excoriated the Liberals over the issue and told Bay Street they wouldn't go near the issue.
Thus will end, the Harperites insist, the "fiscal imbalance" debate in which provinces, led by Quebec, said they had too little money and Ottawa too much.
This would be a refreshing change from the Harper government's annoying tendency to ignore or dismiss its critics – although, on climate change the Harperites actually do not do this, given that a few years ago they were denying it even existed.
Harperites would retort that they are merely reacting to an environment that has proven to be fundamentally hostile to their philosophy and objectives.
Both issues have populist appeal and would not be offensive to a Conservative base, making it conceivable the Harperites will attempt to appease Layton on these two fronts.
"The Harperites' strategy of investing in U.S.-style mega-prisons has been a proven failure when it comes to stopping crime," Liberal public safety critic Mark Holland said in a news statement Monday.
