From Middle High German donerstac, from Old High German donarestag, thonarestag (11th c.), from Proto-West Germanic *Þunras dag (“day of the thunder god”). Compare German Donnersdag, Low German Dunnersdag, Dutch donderdag, West Frisian tongersdei, English Thursday, Danish torsdag.
