Etymology edit

First attested as Braeckrijk in 1681. Named after a former estate. Originally a compound of braak (breach) and rijk (realm), currently a compound of els (alder, Alnus sp.) and rijk. The estate was renamed by one of its owners, Symon Elskamp, as a jocular reference to his surname.
