Etymology

edit

From Middle Irish Eógan, from Primitive Irish ᚔᚃᚑᚌᚓᚅᚔ (ivogeni, gen.sg.), from Proto-Celtic *Iwogenos (literally yew-born).[1] Cognate with Scottish Gaelic Eòghann.

Sometimes conflated or confused with the etymologically unrelated name Eoin (John), with which the vocative/genitive form Eoghain is homophonous.
