Summary

Description

Cortinarius aurantiobasis Ammirati & A.H. Sm.

Image location: Sawmill Mountain Road, Tuolumne Co., California, USA

These were growing under small pines at ~ 4000 Ft.

Caps were up to 5.3 cm across.

Could not get a spore print but the spores were ~ 7.9-10.0 X 5.1-6.5 microns and moderately to strongly rough. Q(ave.) = 1.47. KOH on the cap was a dark reddish brown. Cortinarius croceus is a good possibility but the spores seem a little too large & rough and maybe the coloring is a little too dark? 4-26-12 I’m going with C. croceus as it seems to be considered the local current name for this common Dermocybe.

Recognized by sight: It is possible this species is undescribed. This collection has orange gills while C. croceus usually has yellow gills.

Used references: Species descriptions of C. aurantiobasis and C. idahoensis.
