Title
Hawking vervel
Description
English: A silver vervel in the form of a circular band, inscribed around the outer face with the owner's name, 'Richa. Hardres Esqr.' Some scratches to the outer surface, some corrosion on the inner surface.

Vervels were one of the few non-organic items of falconry equipment, which explains their survival in the archaeological record. They were made of metal and used to attach the bird's leather jesses to a leash which was held in the hand and limited the range of bird in training, or which was affixed to a block (perch). Vervels were inscribed in such a manner as to allow identification of the bird (when lost, for instance) and usually featured either the owner's name, place of residence, coat of arms or a combination of the three.

Finds Liaison Officer submission contains the following information: 'Richard Hardres, Knight and Baronet of Hardres Court, Upper Hardres, nr Canterbury, b. 23 April 1606, d. 25 October 1669'.
