Photographer
The Portable Antiquities Scheme, Susheela Burford, 2018-02-01 11:06:22
Title
Roman coin: siliqua of Julian (coin 7)
Description
English: Treasure Number: 2017T909

Period: Roman

Date of Discovery: 1st, 2nd and 21st October 2017

Circumstances of discovery: Metal detecting on cultivated land

Description: a scattered hoard totalling 63 late Roman silver siliquae, recovered from the plough soil. At least nine of the coins have been clipped and 21 coins are broken with half or less than half remaining. The earliest coins present are those of the emperor Constantius II minted between circa AD 359 to 361. The latest coins are those of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius minted between AD 395 and 402. For a full catalogue of the coins please see the tables below.

Discussion: a number of scattered, late Roman siliquae hoards have been recorded on the PAS database, including a hoard totalling 73 siliquae recovered from the top soil of a field entrance in two periods of discovery, from Witham Friary, Somerset (Burnett 2012). Other siliquae hoards, which are fewer in number but have been recovered more locally include a hoard of 39 clipped siliquae from Little Busby, North Yorkshire (Morris 2012) and a hoard of 24 siliquae from Catterton, also North Yorkshire (Marks 2016).

Conclusion: in conclusion, these objects constitute a prima facie case of treasure by consisting of more than 10% precious metal content in that they are silver, and are of an antiquity greater than 300 years.
