Summary
| Description |
Introduced yearlong-green annual, erect herb 30-100 cm tall. It exudes white latex if damaged and stems are hollow. Leaves are thin, lyrate-pinnatifid, 6-35 cm long, with irregularly toothed margins ending in soft spines and usually with acute auricles. Flowerheads are panicles, with heads (5-6 mm wide) containing yellow petal-like flowers. Fruits are wrinkled throughout and topped with a parachute of silky hairs. Flowering is throughout the year. A native of Europe, it is a weed of disturbed areas, such as roadsides, stockyards, dairy laneways and cropping. It is well adapted to a wide range of soils and environments. Highly palatable and nutritious. Only a nuisance weed of pastures in difficult to access areas, as it is readily grazed by stock where they can reach it. Can be a problem in reduced-till and stubble retention systems due to herbicide resistance. Can act as an alternative host to pest and diseases of crops. Can be controlled by grazing, chipping, cultivation and herbicides. For control, it is essential to prevent its prolific seed production. |
