Summary
DescriptionUSACE division visit to Europe District coincides with German Fasching celebrations (6886425119).jpg | Lt. Col. Michelle Garcia, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District deputy commander, playfully cuts the tie of David Leach, USACE North Atlantic Division programs director, Feb. 16, 2012, at the Amelia Earhart Center in Wiesbaden, Germany. Leach’s visit to the district coincides with the first day of German Fasching, or Carnival, season. The celebration, similar to Mardi Gras in the U.S., is a time when Germans behave recklessly before the beginning of Lent. The crazy festivities of Fasching begin today, the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which is known as Weiberfastnacht or Women’s carnival night. Tradition dictates that women are allowed to cut off the tie of any man within reach. The act dates back to pagan times and symbolizes the power of women and their ability to rule over men, especially in crazy times. In the spirit of Fasching, Garcia embraced the tradition and left Leach with half a tie. "Hopefully it wasn’t his favorite!" (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo by Carol E. Davis) |
