Gåmålerken
Norwegian Nynorsk
editAlternative forms
edit- Gåmålersken, Gåmmålersken (alternative spelling)
Etymology
editDefinite form; from a contraction of Gamal-Eirik, using the dialectal form gåmål for gamal (“old”).
Pronunciation
editProper noun
editGåmålerken m
- (dialectal, Trøndelag) Alternative form of Gamal-Eirik (“the devil”)
Usage notes
editThe sound r in the Trøndelag dialects turns into sj preceding the plosives k, t, p, akin to the sound it gets in the combination rs. The combination rk thus merges with rsk, and these spellings may be used interchangeably, for instance in the misspelling kark for karsk, and the dialectal pronunciation kjersk of kjerk (“church”).
