Luxembourgish edit

Etymology edit

From Middle French general (15th c.) and German General (16th c.), eventually from Latin generālis. The -o- is slightly unexpected and may be due to influence by older Latinate words in stressed -ol (such as Spidol vis-à-vis German Spital, from Middle High German spitāl).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ʒeneˈʀoːl/, [ʒənəˈʀoːl], /ɡe-/
