Possibly from Middle High German grebel (spade), from Old High German grebil (spade), derived from the verb graban (to dig), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰróbʰ-, o-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- (to dig, scratch, bury).
