Possibly from Middle High German grebel (“spade”), from Old High German grebil (“spade”), derived from the verb graban (“to dig”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰróbʰ-, o-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- (“to dig, scratch, bury”).
