Etymology edit

From Old Norse Heitradalr, *Heitrardalr, from the river name *Heitr f (now Heddøla) + dalr (valley). The modern /d/ of the first part is an assimilation with the following consonant, cf. the nearby Flatdal /²fladːaːl/.
