Etymology edit

First attested as Kruisdorp in 1867. Compound of hoofd (head-, chief) and dorp (village). Originally named Kruisdorp after the village's central location in the Haarlemmermeer. The settlement was renamed in 1868 as it became the chief settlement of the polder.
