Etymology

Originally the name of the nearby lake, derived from Sami, ultimately from Proto-Samic *ëlēmānčë (“highest, uppermost, topmost”) (whence Northern Sami alimuš),[1] thus a distant doublet of ylimmäinen (specifically its oblique stem ylimmäise-).
