From Old Norse Jórvík, an adaptation of Old English Eoforwīċ, from Latin Eborācum, from Proto-Brythonic *Eβrọg, *Eβorāg. The Old English form comes from a false association with eofor (boar). Cognate with Faroese and Icelandic Jórvík, Swedish Jorvik, and Danish Jorvig.
