editEtymology
editDerived from Kéis (“cheese”) because of a popular belief (also found in parts of the Rhineland) that the hedgehog drinks from cow udders at night. Formally perhaps an alteration of the variant Kéiselek, which is equivalent to an English *cheeseling.
