Etymology edit

Diminutive of an obsolete *Kanäin with regular velarisation (compare Schwäin). Further from Middle Dutch conijn, from Old French connin, from Latin cunīculus. Cognate with Central Franconian Kneng, German Kanin(chen), Dutch konijn.
