Reduced Anglicized form of Irish Mac Fhionnáin (“son of Fionnán”), a diminutive of fionn (“fair, blond”) or of Ó Cianáin (“descendant of Cianán”), from which Keenan, or of Ó Cuinneáin (“descendant of Cuinneán”), from which Cunneen.
