Etymology edit
First attested as letthemutha and leithemutha in the first half of the 11th century. Compound of a hydronym derived from Proto-Germanic *lag- (“water”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi and either Old Frisian mutha (“mouth”) or Old Dutch mutha (“mouth”).
