Etymology

edit

Superseded (by conflation with Italian Luigi) the older native form Lisi (then also Lici), which was already an adaptation of Old French Louis, Looïs, Luis, from Latin Ludovīcus, from Old High German *Hlūtwīg or Frankish *Hlōdowig, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hlūdaz (loud, famous) + *wīgą (battle). Compare English Louis, Spanish Luis, German Ludwig, Italian Luigi, Portuguese Luís. Compare the same phono-morphological output also for articianu (artisan), parmicianu (parmisan), particianu (partisan), also Diunisi (Dionysius, Dennis) and Tamisi (Thames).
