From Malay maling (“thief, pirate”) +‎ Malay danau (“lake”) or “pirates of the lake”, associated in Malay history with the worst types of pirates from the island, /l/ has shifted sound to /ɡ/. See also Old Javanese maliṅ ranu (“thieves of the lake”). Compare Malay lanun, and Iranun.
