"to go up"

edit

@The dog2 I don't think it's 起 when it's going up a mountain/stairs. "To go up" and "to get on (a vehicle)" should be separate modules imo. "To go up" doesn't really need a module from what I can tell. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 16:16, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: At least in Teochew, and in Singaporean and Taiwanese Hokkien, it is used in that sense. Nobody uses 上 as a verb. Listen to the classic Taiwanese Hokkien song 愛拼才會贏, and one of the lines in the song is "人生可比是海上的波浪,有時起有時落。" And see this clip (1:47) for Shantou Teochew, the woman who is asked the man to climb the stairs says "猛猛起來"。 The dog2 (talk) 16:25, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: Alright, I see. That said, in the song, it is "go up", but more like "rise" (without an agent) - which I wouldn't translate as 上 into Mandarin (but would probably translate as 有起有伏 or something like that). 上 is definitely used in Hokkien (at least in Xiamen, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou) when it comes to "go up" (with an agent) (e.g. 上樓梯, 上去) and to get on (e.g. 上車, 上船, 上飛機). — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 16:38, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
