Maoming

edit

@Justinrleung Do you know any more regarding this one? And as per [1], it's 看 in Maoming so should we add that in somehow? The dog2 (talk) 19:03, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

@The dog2: I don't know that there's much work done on this dialect, which is a shame. I think we'll hold off on this for now. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 19:48, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Should we limit the scope?

edit

@The dog2 I think this could get a little messy. There are other terms that are equivalent to 養, but they're kind of different. For example, in Hokkien, there's a word io (育 or 邀) for "raising up children" (probably more about caring), and there's also chhiâⁿ for "raising up children" (probably more about teaching). The easiest thing to limit it to is probably in the context of 養雞 or 養狗, i.e. animals only. What do you think? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 20:22, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: If we are to limit it, I would prefer we limit it to the general term which applies to both humans and animals. After all, we do say 飼囝 in Hokkien. It's not just 飼狗. The dog2 (talk) 20:38, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: Sometimes, there isn't such a term (or such a term isn't available). It's better to be more specific. Most dictionaries actually separate the animal sense from the human sense (e.g. Xiandai Hanyu Guifan Cidian 给动物喂食,并照顾它的生活,使能成长 vs. 供给维持生活必需的钱、物;抚育). We could have two separate modules. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 20:41, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: OK, let's split it into 2 different modules then. It just so happens that in Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien, the word is the same for both people and animals. The dog2 (talk) 20:45, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
