Old High German Nanzig, from Late Latin Nanciaco (also attested as Nanciacum, Nanceiacum), probably from a Gaulish name Nantiaco (“domain of Nantios”), a name possibly from the noun nantos (“(deepened) valley, torrent, river”), from Proto-Celtic *nantos.[1][2] Cognate with German Nanzig.
