By rebracketing of the phrase στὸν Εὔριπον ("to Evripos") as στὸ Νεὔριπον ("to Nevripos"), thence Negroponte ("Black Bridge" in Italian) by folk etymology, the bridge being interpreted as the bridge of Chalcis.
