Indonesian edit

Etymology edit

From English New Guinea or Tok Pisin Niugini. Borrowing from Dutch Nieuw-Guinea is less likely.

Proper noun edit

Nugini

  1. (rare, fossil word) New Guinea (A large Oceanian island in the Pacific Ocean)

Usage notes edit

Unlike Borneo and Celebes that could be sometimes used interchangeably with Kalimantan and Sulawesi respectively, Nugini is a fossil word, and Indonesians almost always never make use of Nugini except in explanatory uses, and used synonyms below instead outside of fossilized terms (see the section below). The proper noun Nugini Barat is normally only used in historical contexts such as in kampanye Nugini BaratWestern New Guinea campaign”.
