  • (Heemskerk) First attested as poelenberch in 1426. Compound of Middle Dutch poel (pool, swamp) and borch (castle). Named after a former manor.
  • (Zaanstad) Derived from Poelenburg (a surname). Named after a former sawmill which was named in turn after one of its owners, Pieter Jochemsz. Poelenburg.
