Prostějov
Czech edit
Etymology edit
The town was originally called Prostějovice, which was derived from person personal name Prostěj + -ovice, meaning "a village of Prostěj's people". Prostěj was an informal form of some compound personal name such as Prostimír or Prostislav, where the first component is derived from Proto-Slavic *prostъ (“simple”). For similar etymology see Budějovice or Hodějovice.[1]
The name Prostějovice was shortened to Prostějov in the 1st half of the 13th century.[2] Compare Holešov or Chomoutov.
