Of unclear origin. Possibly related to herdhe (“nest; herd”), from *skarda- (pre-Albanian *sḱordʰos, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerdʰeh₂ (“herd”) + *laida, from Proto-Indo-European *leyt- (“to leave, die”), thus meaning something like “herd or flock leader”.
