Of unclear origin. Possibly related to herdhe (nest; herd), from *skarda- (pre-Albanian *sḱordʰos, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerdʰeh₂ (herd) + *laida, from Proto-Indo-European *leyt- (to leave, die), thus meaning something like “herd or flock leader”.
