Etymology

From Classical nivem, with an early lowering of [ɪ] to [ɛ] caused by the following [β]. (Cf. the lowering from [ʊ] to [ɔ] in colubra > *colobra.) Alternatively, the stressed vowel may simply have been taken from nĕbula (“fog”).
