Unknown. Turner compares to Nepali चोयो (coyo, split cane for making nets), Sindhi [script needed] (coī, framework with nets attached for catching fish). Compare also Sanskrit चीर (cīra, strip of bark, cloth), Prakrit *𑀘𑀯 (*cava, point or blade of plough) (> Hindi चौ (cau)).
