Proto-Finnic

Etymology

edit

Possibly akin to Western Mansi [script needed] (nē̮r, pine nut), Northern Khanty нахәр (nahər, pine nut) (suggesting a root *nëkrɜ), but this is uncertain due to the semantic difference, and the atypical sound structure: most Finnic words with consonant clusters such as *-kr-, *-kl-, *-pr-, *-tr- are loanwords (cf. e.g. *atra, *nëkla, *sëpra, *takla).
