Proto-Finno-Ugric *waja- +‎ *-ot'ak. Cognates include Northern Sami vuodjut, Erzya and Moksha ваямс (vajams), Udmurt выйыны (vyjyny), Northern Mansi [script needed] (uj-) and possibly Hungarian vejsze.
