Etymology

edit

From an earlier n-stem *stubbô ~ *stubbaz, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp-, *(s)tewb⁽ʰ⁾- (to push; knock; butt), but the reason for the voiced coda is uncertain. Compare Ancient Greek στύπος (stúpos, stump).
