Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/šulьga
Proto-Slavic
editEtymology
editMostly likely from *šulъ (“broken”) + *-ьga, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śjaulas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱsewlos, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱsewl-, from *ḱes- (“to cut”). The alleged connection with *šȗjь (“left”) is probably erroneous.
Noun
edit*šulьga f[1]
- (originally) maimed, chopped off (without right hand)
- (East Slavic) left-handed
