Reconstruction:Proto-Uralic/śajwa
Proto-Uralic
editReconstruction
editUEW gives the reconstruction *śojwa, but this does not match any of the descendants. Contrast *ojwa (“head”).
The cluster *jw is reconstructed on the basis of Sami, but also *wj is possible, as metathesis *vj > *jv is regular in Kola Sami (compare Proto-Samic *čoavjē). This may suggest that the word is originally a derivative: *śawe + *-ja.
