Reconstruction talk:Proto-Indo-European/móri

There are a number of hydronyms in Europe, which may descend from the proto-root *móri... Since it has not been proven conclusively where their names come from, I'm going to list the biggest water bodies here: r. Marica (in Thrace region), r. Mureș (in Transylvania), r. Morava (in Czechia), r. Morava (in Easter Serbia), l. Mjǫrs (in Scandinavia). Some of the names may reflect the root for depletion *mer- (to die, to deplete) (cf. Proto-Slavic: *morkъ (darkness, dimness)). For example, the Czech Morava is the only blackwater river in Europe, so its name may just mean Dim river. It's possible, though, that *móri is of the same origin as *mer-, so this does not represent a big problem. Bezimenen (talk) 09:56, 5 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
