Etymology edit

Ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *sagisnu. The archaic variant above strongly suggests that the form continues the original Old High German segisna. Alternatively it could also be from the more common metathesis segansa (whence German Sense), in which case it would exhibit sporadic pre-fricative nasal loss (as in eis).
