From Middle Limburgish söethout/soëtholt, a calque of Ancient Greek γλυκύρριζα (glukúrrhiza) from γλυκύς (glukús, sweet) + ῥίζα (rhíza, root). Equivalent to söüt (sweet) +‎ Hout (wood).
