Etymology

edit

Adapted from the Swedish name Sörnäs, from earlier *Södernäs (söder (south) + näs (isthmus, spit)).[1] The Swedish name was adapted as a -nen nominal, as the ending -nen in many Finnish place names is often -s in the corresponding Swedish name, probably because the oblique (inflection) stem of -nen is -s(e)-.

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): /ˈsørnæi̯nen/, [ˈs̠ø̞rnæi̯ne̞n]
  • Rhymes: -ørnæinen
  • Syllabification(key): Sör‧näi‧nen

Proper noun

edit

Sörnäinen

  1. A neighborhood of Helsinki

Declension

edit

The internal locative cases (inessive, illative and elative) are used with this place name when referring to a location.
